The shingle is the part you choose. The parts that decide the lifespan are the ones nobody looks at again.
The sequence is not complicated. Tear off, inspect and repair the deck, dry in, redo the details, lay the field, sort the ventilation, clean up.
What makes it a Pueblo job rather than a generic one is what the climate does to the parts in between.
Temperature swing is the local enemy
Pueblo’s daily temperature range is large, and it is large all year. Every component on the roof expands and contracts through that cycle every single day: fasteners, flashing, sealant, the shingles themselves.
Over years that movement works fasteners loose, opens sealed joints and fatigues flashing. It is why detail work matters more here than the brand of shingle, and why a roof assembled carelessly fails early even in the absence of hail.
Altitude and ultraviolet
At around four and a half thousand feet the ultraviolet load is meaningfully higher than at sea level, and ultraviolet is the thing that ages asphalt. A shingle is working harder here than its rating assumed.
Practical consequence: buy on wind and impact rating rather than on price, and do not treat the cheapest three tab as a saving. It is a shorter roof.
Ventilation, both directions
Summer: an attic that cannot exhaust heat bakes the deck and the shingles from underneath.
Winter: warm moist air from the house reaching a cold deck condenses on it, wets the sheathing and, where it runs, imitates a leak convincingly.
Balanced intake at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge solves both. Exhaust without intake is worse than neither, because it pulls conditioned air out of the house through every gap.
What the contract should name
Shingle by manufacturer, line, wind rating and impact class. Underlayment. Ice and water protection at valleys and penetrations. New flashing, new pipe boots and new valley metal, stated as new. Ventilation, intake and exhaust both. Per sheet decking price. The permit and the jurisdiction. Workmanship and material warranties separately with lengths. And a payment schedule that reflects Colorado’s rule that payments are held until materials are delivered or work has begun.

- Best time of year?
Late spring through autumn, and shoulder seasons are better than midsummer. Asphalt needs warmth to seal properly, so a deep winter install may not bond until spring, which matters in a place where the wind gets up.
- Can they go over the old shingles?
Sometimes permitted, rarely wise. It conceals decking nobody has inspected, adds weight, runs hotter under this sun, and doubles the tear off next time.
- Who pulls the permit?
Ask, and ask in whose name. Requirements differ between the City of Pueblo, Pueblo County and Fremont County, and a company working here every week knows which applies to your address.
